Projects - Process and Progress

Migrant Cinema

The full title of this project is: Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe and is a Research Network funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the Diasporas, Migration and Identities Programme. I am building a web site using ExpressionEngine. I have also set up a BaseCamp site to help them manage the project.

Here is a sample page for the project

MigrantCinema | Podcasts

I have now posted the first podcast section to the Migrant Cinema web site.

Migrant Cinema - Podcast screen

I wasn’t able to record the talks myself. They were recorded with a Sony D3 tape deck. This was fine but transferring to digital takes a long time. Always good to have something else to do while the audio transfers.

There is more...

Migrant Cinema Books

I have added a section for books.

I am using the Amazon plug-in for ExpressionEngine to deliver book information. All that the editor needs to do is to enter the book title and and the ASIN number and the rest is automatic. The is an option for the researcher to add in their own notes about this book.

Borrowing a DVD from the Library

A good feature: when viewing films, it is possible for Project Participants to ask to borrow the DVD from the collection in the Project Library. How does this work?

By extracting the title, director and date from the ExpressionEngine tags, then we pass that via the URL to the email form page. The email message is then populated from the text in the last three segments of the URL.

Can’t be demonstrated unless you are logged in with correct permissions, but it really works.

MigrantCinema - First ‘Look and Feel’ posted

We have the domain registered and have posted the first attempt.

Migrant Cinema

I am very pleased with this and it represents a little bit of a departure; I have ranged everything right and ued the space on the left for a map of Europe. This shows more or less depending on the screen size. This is a fixed layout, but rather than going for a centered design, I have pushed everything over to the right of the window.

We are fortunate to be able to use the image from the poster of the film: Crossing the Bridge, Fatih Akin (2005). Photo courtesy of Corazón International/Hamburg. I have used the colours in this image to build a colour scheme.
