O’Reilly Animals

I heard a podcast with the voice of Eddie Freeman, the creative director of O'Reilly Books.

The idea of putting an engraving of an animal on many of the O'Reilly books was her idea. She had a book of engravings in her home and used that to seed the idea with her publishing colleagues.

furthermore...

What I like about this story is how the animals are chosen for their appropriateness to the subject. Sometimes the link is very tenuous and according to the web site customers are constantly asking the publishers for an explanation of the relationship between the animal and the subject of the book.

The example shown here for Eric Meyer's very handy pocket CSS has an image of leaping salmon. Cascading Style Sheets / Leaping Salmon - get it?

My other favorite book - Amazon Hacks has a disappointing cover. The image of a machete, ready to slash and hack through the Amazon rain forest, is used instead of a beautiful tropical bird! The machete is presented as a photograph rather than an engraving.
